Ethiopian Center for Strategic Studies (ECSS) officially established at Unity University College on June 23, 2007 by electing Dr. Arega Yirdaw, Chief Executive Officer of MIDROC Ethiopia as Chairman of the Center, Dr. Costantinos Berhe, President of Lem Ethiopia as Vice Chairman and Dr. Fisseha Eshetu, President of UUC as secretary.

 At the first consultative meeting held at UUC which included prominent personalities from government and non-governmental organizations, institutions of higher learning and the private sector it was decided that the establishment of an independent and a non-partisan university based think capable to deal with varied strategic issues pertaining to social economic and political development would go a long way in alleviating the many faceted economic, social and, political problems facing the country today. The Center is expected to serve as a venue where stakeholders in the nation building process think, learn, share knowledge on a number of pressing issues related to the speedy all round development. Towards this end ECSS will be undertaking forums on a multitude range of strategic issues and socio-economic policy under various topics and themes. One of the principles of the Center according to Dr. Fisseha is to promote tolerance, mutual respect and collaboration and interaction among the Ethiopian people despite their diversity of ethnicity, belief, culture and language. The Center will also strive to raise awareness on economic and social policy through dialogue, information dissemination and networking with local and international stakeholders.
