MIS as an Academic Discipline


Definition:

MIS is an integrated, computer-based user-machine system for providing information to support operations, management, and decision-making functions in an organization (B.Davis and H.Olson, 1985).

Alternative terminologies for MIS:

  1. Organizational Information Systems
  2. Computer-based Information systems, or simply
  3. Information Systems

MIS is a multidisciplinary, socio-technical field of study. It is the study of information systems focusing on their use in business organizations. The study of MIS as an academic discipline arose in the 1970s to focus on computer-based information systems aimed at managers (B.Davis and H.Olson, 1985).
